Our Story
Paula Boyle

Paula is an actor, writer and singer-songwriter. She put her passion for the Arts to one side to complete her medical training and is now delighted to have found time to enjoy both.
In the last few years she has created opportunities to travel all over the country and take part in shorts, feature films and TV pilots whilst performing on stage in her home county of Yorkshire. Passionate about people, humanity and under represented voices she is so excited to be working with Kate on Rise & Howl and is loving getting to grips with the projects we are producing to create space and opportunity for local talent.
Our co-founder, Kate, had this to say:
"When I meet someone that eats a lot of cheese, and is a kind soul AND has amazing stage presence, I make it my mission to get them in my life.
Paula is extraordinary.
Her commitment to her performances and her collaborative approach to those around her make working with her a joy.
It was only natural that we should want to set up Rise and Howl to create inclusive opportunities for writers, directors and actors to create magical moments.
She said she would…..and she is."

Paula and Kate’s story began on stage in Byrne and Hirsts' wonderful play, The Incident Room, at Ilkley Playhouse. Set around the investigation of the Yorkshire Ripper this gritty drama delves into the complexities of the case, exploring the psychological impacts on both detectives and civilians. They were both drawn to its' challenging themes and recognised the unique opportunity it gave for a local story to be told within the heart of the community it affected; They were equally overwhelmed when family and friends of those whose lives these events changed came to watch.
During rehearsals their shared vision quickly became evident as they entered into long conversations about the wealth of talent in the North, the incredible stories that go untold and the potential of theatre to provoke thought and bring about change. Their passion for telling culturally relevant stories was clear and in recognising their complementary skills the next step seemed inevitable, they had to set up their own production company, start small, work hard and dream big.
And so Rise & Howl is here and we set out a with a dedication to tackle bold narratives, give a voice to stories untold and produce culturally significant works. Our mission is that our projects do not simply entertain but also engage, resonate and spark conversations that increase empathy and understanding in our society.

Kate Maddison-Greenwell
After 25+ years forging a career in HR, Kate found her way back to acting in 2023. Having her son, JP, turn 18 was the wake up call she needed to start living creatively again.
Since then, she has had lead roles in two short films, and acted in various productions with Ilkley Playhouse, Bingley Theatre and Bradford Playhouse.
This is what our co-founder Paula has to say about Kate;
"I can't believe it's only a year since I met Kate. She danced into my life like a breath of fresh air bringing her energy, light and enthusiasm for people and the Arts.
Kate's passion is energising and her commitment to a project so powerful she is the person everyone wants on their team. What struck me the most is the genuine joy she gets from supporting and celebrating others successes as much as her own. Her incredibly efficient, organised, IT savvy approach is the perfect antedote to my pencil and pad, scattergun, mind-map world. Thank you Universe!
She said she would.....and she is."
